These are just a few hints and links to helpful information and tools to help our customers understand the basics of web marketing, search engine placement etc. They are not intended as a complete guide, just a first few important steps to getting started. However, they are in a particular order and you should keep to this order wherever possible.

Inward Links are now one of the most important items for getting recognised with the major search engines and will help you to a higher listing. Check your inward links and get advice on adding to them. It pays to set up at least one or two inward links before submitting to the search engines. Get a free popularity check at Marketleap.com and compare your performance with thedifferent search engines. Marketleap will also check which search engines already have you indexed and compare your performance against your competitors.

Keywords - choose the correct ones. There is no point in getting good results on a keyword search which gets no traffic. That is, if you select keywords which other people do not search you will still get no traffic. On the other hand, if you target overpopular keywords you may end up at number 150 - on the fifteenth page and still not get found. For a free trial and to see how important it is to select the right keywords, take a free trial of wordtracker . Wordtracker checks against millions of real searches over the last sixty days to see how popular your chosen keywords really are - then it suggests suitable alternatives!

Directories such as Yahoo and Open Directory (DMOZ) are not search engines. They pride themselves on being true directories and submissions are individually checked by editors to ensure your entry description matches your site. DMOZ is free and additions are made quite quickly, but Yahoo now charge £199 for express entry and that is the only way to have a business entered. Non-profit sites can still be entered free, but there is no guarantee of if or when. Directories are amongst the highest rated inward links on search engines but try to fit as many as possible of your chosen keywords into the directory entry.

Prepare your pages for entry in the search engines before you add your URL. Unless you are paying (and that’s fast becoming an important option) you may get indexed but not highly rated on your chosen keywords or phrases. Preparing your pages before submissio increases your chances of a higher rating.

Check the popularity of search engines for your chosen marketplace. US traffic is not always the same as UK or European traffic. To reach the largest part of your chosen marketplace you need to be well placed with only five or six search engines, but which ones? The Nielsen Netratings are an accurate and highly respected guide to global search engine traffic broken down into countries and regions. Check for the countries you want to market to for the most popular search engines.
